Why Use WordPress?
This is a subpage of our wordpress directory.
So, why should you use WordPress? Maybe you shouldn’t. It depends. WordPress is a tool that can be used to complete a job (building a website). It’s a very good tool, but it’s not for everyone or for every task.
For example, I wouldn’t use WordPress to build a membership site that I expect to have tens of thousands or more users. While we could do it with WordPress, we would end up fighting to cache and maximize performance. WordPress’s database just isn’t meant to be used by so many people due to the way it is structured.
But we all aren’t looking to start the next Instagram or Facebook.
Most of us are looking to get a website up that is informational, attractive, selling things, etcetera. While we do hope to be popular, we’re not looking to be on such a high scale that everyone in the world will be using our website.
WordPress is capable of handling millions of requests per day and is suitable for 95%+ of websites.
You should give it a try, and here’s why:
WordPress Powers A Lot Of The Internet
Did you know a very large percentage of the internet uses WordPress? It’s the most common Content Management System out there. That means you’re in good company. There are brands that you’ve heard of using WordPress – even fortune 500 companies.
It also means that there is a very large development community (including this website) eager to help you with your problems. There are even professional support companies. If you have a problem, someone can fix it or point you in the right direction.
WordPress Is Free
As much as we hate to admit it, finances can play a large part in the packages and tools that we use to power our web presence. You can host on wordpress.com for free, or download and install WordPress on your hosting. You will need to pay for hosting and a domain name, but the software (WordPress) is absolutely 100% no strings attached free.
It always has been and always will be.
WordPress is as good as, or better than, other Content Management Systems that can costs many thousands of dollars.
Anyone Can Use WordPress
Anyone who has the willpower to try to create their own website can use WordPress. There are no restrictions and imagination is the only limitation.
Even if you’re not a developer and don’t want to touch a line of code, you can still use WordPress. You can use the Gutenberg editor to design your pages and pick a theme that matches your vision and install plugins that do what you need it to do.
WordPress even adheres to accessibility standards so people with less than perfect vision or other disabilities can still use it.
There’s a learning curve but there will be with any other software you choose to use. Why not choose WordPress?
WordPress Is Extendable And Customizable.
WordPress can be extended with self-written code or plugins. WordPress can even be used entirely with self-written code. There’s a plugin for everything.
If you need certain functionality for your website to work, I can just about guarantee you could find a plugin for it. You could do it yourself. You could pay someone to do it for you.
The WordPress coding community is absolute massive. The majority of this website deals with WordPress How-To’s. There are many others like this one and you’re always just a google search away from an answer.
WordPress is just SO configurable, extendable, and customizable. I haven’t had a problem yet that I couldn’t solve within the confines of WordPress or where WordPress limited me (and I’ve been coding in WP for over 20 years).
WordPress Is Fast To Get Up And Running
You don’t have to spend a lot of time installing and configuring WordPress. Most hosts have 1 click installs and the installation process has a famous “5 minute installation“. It could be called the 2 minute installation because it never takes 5.
All you have to do is input your site name, a login, and configure your database with easily displayed prompts and you’re up and running.
You have a website and you can now start using it!
Other CMS’s may have multiple files you need to edit just to get started. WordPress has 1 – wp-config, and it’s installation wizard can make this file fo ryou.
WordPress is Beginner Friendly & Expert Friendly
We’ve already went over a lot of reasons why WordPress is good for those just getting started. It’s also friendly for those who know what they’re doing.
WordPress can be customized and extended in so many ways. There’s a function for everything. People who have been developing in WordPress for years can still learn new things and new features come out with every release.
It’s a good software and it’s a fun hobby. If you’re looking for a hobby (or even a job), WordPress Development is the way to go.
You can even take the knowledge you learn while developing with WordPress and apply it to general web development.
Try WordPress
If you’ve made it this far, you’re obviously interested in trying out WordPress. Give it a try, you’ve got nothing to lose.
